Arrest warrant issued against Nobel laureate Dr Yunus

Correspondent reports say labor court in Dhaka has issued an arrest warrant against Nobel laureate Dr Muhammad Yunus in three cases has filed for terminating employees over formation of trade union.

Dhaka's Third Labour Court chairman Rahibul Islam issued an arrest warrant has been issued against Grameen Telecom founder chairman Dr Muhammad Yunus on Wednesday (Oct 9).

Rahibul Islam said that, on July 3, three former employees, who had been dismissed from the Grameen Communications established, lodged the cases against the Nobel laureate and two officials with the same court. Dr Yunus is the chairman of Grameen Communications, and two others summoned by the court are Managing Director Naznin Sultana and Deputy General Manager Khandaker Abu Abedin.

Abdus Salam, one of the plaintiffs of the cases, told that some employees formed a trade union, Grameen Communications Sramik Karmachari Union, for organizing themselves and own welfare.

He claimed that the accused has started misbehaving with them after he came to know the trade union formation. At one stage, the accused sacked three employees- Abdus Salam, Shah Alam and Emranul Haque, without showing any reason behind the termination.
