Khaleda’s bail hearing in Charitable Trust case Tuesday

High Court has fixed Tuesday (July 30) to hear the bail petition of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia in the Zia Charitable Trust corruption case.

The bench of Justice Obaidul Hassan and Justice SM Kuddus Zaman fixed the date on Sunday (July 28), after hearing a petition by the former prime minister’s lawyers.

Moudud Ahmed, Khandker Mahbub Hossain, Joynul Abedin, and Kayser Kamal, among others, stood for Khaleda.

Khaleda Zia's lawyer barrister Kaiser Kamal said, ''BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia was seriously ill. Her bail was appealed. Hopefully, the court will consider the matter and grant her bail that day.''

A special court sentenced Begum Khaleda to seven years in jail in the Zia Charitable Trust corruption case on October 29, 2018. Three others, including her former political secretary Harris Chowdhury, were also convicted.

Khaleda has been in jail since February 2018, after she was jailed for corruption in the Zia Orphanage Trust case. Her jail term was later doubled. She has moved the Appellate Division, challenging her conviction.

BNP claims that the cases against her are politically motivated and aimed at keeping her out of politics. The government denies the allegation.

She is currently undergoing treatment at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) due to illness.
