Woman raped while seeking blood for husband

The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has arrested two persons for allegedly being involved in the rape of a woman who was trying to manage blood for her husband.

They were arrested in Monipuripara in the capital on Friday night. A case was filed against them with Mirpur police station.

The arrestees are- Monowar Hossain Sajib, 43, from Lakshmipur and Mashnu Ara Shilpi, from Faridpur.

The RAB Second Crime Prevention Company (CPC 2) Commanding Officer, Major H M Parvez Arefin confirmed the matter to Dhaka Tribune.

He said that the woman admitted her husband to Suhrawardy Hospital at around 4:00 pm on September 15. The doctor on duty asked her to manage four bags of blood for the patient. She then went to the blood bank on the first floor of the hospital. She found some three to four people sitting there and asked them where she could find blood. Sajib was one of the men sitting there. He told the victim that he could help her manage the blood.

The next day, the victim went to a blood bank in Malibagh as per Sajib’s advice but failed to manage any blood. Sajib, who was also present there, told her that he had a sister in Monipuripara who could donate blood, the RAB official said.

Then Sajib took her to Shilpi’s flat. Shilpi assisted Sajib in raping the victim. Later they threatened to strangle her to death if she revealed the incident, he added.

The victim disclosed the matter to her husband on September 24 when Sajib contacted her again. The victim had not disclosed the incident till then in fear of social stigma, Major Parvej said.

Later the victim filed a complaint with RAB-2, upon which the elite force arrested Sajib and Shilpi.

When asked what Sajib was doing at the hospital in the first place the RAB official said, Sajib was staying at the hospital as a patient’s attendant. His mother is getting treatment there.
