Death toll from Buriganga launch capsize rises to 36

The death toll from the launch capsize in the Buriganga River near Shyambazar climbed to 36 with the recovery of two more bodies on Monday.

Fire Service head office control room duty officer Lima Khanam confirmed media about the figure.

Of the deceased, eight females, three children, and 19 males. The gender of two could not be known, Lima Khanam said.

One person was rescued with injuries and given treatment.

Munshiganj-bound launch 'Morning Bird' with over 100 passengers on board capsized in the river Buriganga at Sadarghat after being hit another vessel 'Moyur-2' around 9:33 am. A number of passengers managed to swim ashore, but many drowned.

Most of the missing passengers hail from Munshiganj while many adjacent to kathpatty ghat.

According to the duty officer at the control room of Fire Service, the Dhaka-bound ‘MV Morning Bird’ launch from Munshiganj sank in the river around 9:33 am after being hit by another launch ‘Mayur-2’ while the launch was anchored in Farashganj ghat.
