The High Court issued a rule on the government seeking explanation within six weeks, why they should not be directed to prohibit the gender detection of unborn babies, in order to ensure the protection of the unborn and pregnant mothers.
The HC bench of Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Md Mostafizur Rahman issued the rule following a writ petition filed by Supreme Court lawyer Advocate Ishrat Hasan seeking necessary order on Monday.
Earlier on January 26, Advocate Ishrat Hasan submitted the petition to the section concerned of the HC seeking necessary directives, and an order to ban revealing the sex of a baby during the pregnancy period.
Earlier on 1 December last year, the lawyer sent a legal notice to the secretaries of the Ministry Of Health, Woman and Children Affairs, and Social Welfare.
The notice asked the three ministries to circulate directives within three days to the govt and non-govt hospitals, diagnostic centers and clinics to stop tests that identify the gender of the baby during pregnancy.
